Sacred Heart Marist College Seminar discuss about how to improve school and its service

The Sacred Heart Marist College, Ejule, in Nigeria held on January 7 a seminar on the topic “Dreaming the Best for School Improvement”. Br. Mark Omede, from the Secretariat for Education and Evangelization of the General Administration was the facilitator of the seminar.

During his remarks, Br. Mark divided the seminar into two sessions with its respective objective and highlighted themes.

The first session, with the theme “Dreaming the Best for School Improvement” had as its objective, to brainstorm and co-design the dream of being the Best Marist Schools; to develop the idea of membership to the network of Marist Schools; to live the experience to attract others.

After the group work, the participants mentioned the following perspectives for the College for the next five years: full digitalization of the school, building of the staff quarters, increasing the number of students; improve staff salaries.

At the end of the first session, Br. Mark Omede tasked teachers to transfer their experience to their classes to create a unique teaching and learning experience.

The second session, with the theme “Participating in School Governance with a Child Safeguarding Approach”, was a lecture on inclusive administration at school that is learner centered. Br. Mark drew the attention of staff to “Child Protection and Safeguarding Act” and other enabling acts aimed at protecting and safeguarding the right of a child at school and other learning environments. He encouraged the principal, Br. Paul Angulu, to allow staff to engage in “Design thinking” the concept he said would enable the staff to identify a problem and proffer solution to the problem.

Br. Mark challenged teachers, especially science teacher, to use design thinking method and provide alternative power in the college kitchen aside the gas and firewood currently used.

At the end of the second session Br. Omede said that Marist educators are caregiver. He charged the tutors to teach with utmost care and love for the children whom he described as God’s gifts. He charged the staff to work in synergy towards achieving the goal of child education.
